HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAX!!! - MAY 6, 2005
On May 6, 1997 Maximilian Tristan Valentin K. was born in Wesel, Westfalen - as far as I know the only notable thing about this town. He was not only Lee and Tony’s first born, he was also the first grandchild on both sides of his family. If we were royal he would be the undisputed heir to the throne. As it is, he is still trying to establish his rule over Alex, who has been quite rebellious these past few years. Actually I think he’s decided it’s more pleasant to just be friends with his brother. Recently when I picked them up from school and we arrived at their house, Alex unbuckled Max’s seatbelt for him and Max said, “Thank you, Alex.” This may not seem like anything to those of you who have not been around young boys recently but when I thought back to all the wrestling/boxing/kick-boxing/judo matches (with at least one child and usually both in tears) that had taken place in the back seat of the car over the past few years, I thought for a minute I had died and been transported to heaven. (I attribute this change, at least in part, to the fact that Lee cut out all their TV watching during the week several months ago. It’s been good for both the boys.)
One week old, deep in contemplation: Was it all worth the effort?
Three months old: Would you look at that!!!
Max soon moved to Bavaria where he has lived ever since. We’re very lucky that he (and his family) are only an hour from us so that it’s no problem to go there for the afternoon (like today).
Max spent his first birthday in Savannah and he almost spent his eighth birthday in America too, because we are all flying to the States next week for a two-week vacation and a big family get-together.
This growing older is awfully serious work.
Max went to kindergarten for three years and at the end of this time he was officially “thrown out”.
What a way to go!
After a long and VERY hot summer, Max entered the first grade in Sch., a small town near where he lives. The first day of first grade is usually a big event in Germany and the children get “cones” filled with school supplies, candy and small presents.
Alex only got a consolation "cone". His big day would come a year later.
Max is now almost at the end of the second grade. He likes school well enough, especially sports, but is not a fan of homework. He would much rather listen to his Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings cds. He knows the Harry Potter stories so well that if you are reading to him and stop for some reason he will continue on by heart.
Easter 2003 - Max receives his first Harry Potter video.
Of course none of us can see into the future and we have no idea what Max will grow up to be. A few possibilities come to mind:
Of course his first pick would be magician, just like Harry Potter.
I’m sure when the time comes Max will have his own ideas and whatever it is that he decides to be, we wish him all the happiness in the world.
