HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS! - DECEMBER 24, 2004
Christmas is always more fun with children and their excitement is infectious. However, now that Max and Alex are both in school and fast becoming more student than child, their belief in Santa Claus has wavered. This falling from belief has been the topic of many discussions in the weeks leading up to Christmas. When I happened to show Alex a picture of Santa Claus with him and his brother, he said, “Oh, there’s Opi, I mean Santa Claus.”
What is Santa contemplating? (2003 in Königshofen)
And a little while later he con-fessed, “Omi, I know that Santa Claus is really Opi or Uncle Ulf.” Max had the most convincing argument: “Last year when Santa came, Opi disappeared because he said he had to fix something in his car and we know Opi can’t repair a car!”
I even baked this year. The oatmeal cookies were very yummy, the banana muffins not so much.
Still, in spite of all this logic, there were days when they wanted to believe and Lee decided to help them out. We had already arranged to celebrate Christmas at our house this year for the first time in several years and Lee had the genius idea of asking our neighbour to play Santa. We already had the costume and so it was just a matter of his getting dressed up and walking the few steps to our door.
"Who could it be?"
So Santa finally arrived and they were the last children on his list for the evening. He had looked all over for them because they weren’t at home like he had expected. He obviously wasn’t Opi or Uncle Ulf because they were both present.
"Ho, Ho, Ho! Is this where I can find Max and Alex?"
And Santa was real. He was jolly and kind and he had a present for each boy. He asked them to play something for him on the piano and Max willingly complied.
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the Way (actually it was a piece by Mozart)
However, Alex (not for the first time) was stricken with shyness or stubbornness or whatever it is that happens to children when their parents want them to perform. Santa was very understanding and gave Alex his present anyway. It wasn’t the robot he had asked for (because they seem to have sold out completely) but it was something at least as good and with more “play potential” – a racing course for his myriad cars.
"Now what does it say here? Have you boys been good?"
And Max didn’t get the DVD of Lord of the Rings that he had asked for (not recommended for children under 16!) but he got a gameboy instead and a promise from Santa that he would remember his wish and give it to him when he was a little older.
So both boys were more than satisfied and Santa bade a fond farewell because he had to get in his sleigh to fly to America.
We were then all free to open the stacks and stacks of presents that had mushroomed under the tree in spite of all our intentions not to overdo it once again. Every one was more than happy with what they got (and I might mention that the photos you are looking at were taken with my brand new Opympus digital camera).
This is just what Lee and Tony brought.
After a long meal of fondue with several delicious salads the men seemed a little pooped out.
The couch is a little small for Ulf.
Poor Tony probably had a fever and was coming down with the flu. Last year Ulf had a bad case of the flu. I hope this doesn't become a tradition!
I didn't hear it but a bomb must have gone off!
The boys played with their toys.....
.....until they too were exhausted.
After Lee and Tony and the boys left for home, Jenny, Ulf, Frank and I played the game that Jenny had given Ulf for Christmas (or was it the other way around?) – Scene It. It’s a game about films with a DVD and among other things you have to watch clips from films and answer questions like what was the name of this film, who are the actors. Frank and I were at a more than slight disadvantage because although we try to go to the movies regularly, we seldom see the mainstream popular films that were more likely to be part of this game. But now that we are the proud owners of a DVD recorder with a hard disk we can watch all sorts of films in order to be better prepared for our next game. Now all we have to do is figure out how to use it. This is likely to take a while!
Our angel is having a bad hair day!
